The CIA has published a pair of online videos as part of the efforts to recruit Chinese officials dissatisfied with corruption and political repression at home.
Chinese language videos produced byiles show an intermediate level official at the service of a corrupt and rich boss, and another showing a very placed official, impatient to be taken in one of the anti-corruption patterns of the Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Videostitled “Why did I contacted the CIA: to take control of my fate” And “Why did I contacted the CIA: for a better life“were published on YouTube and others social media platforms.
In both videos, officials are then shown by contacting the CIA to escape their situation. Videos contain information about how to contact CIA safely via the Dark web.
In a statement quoted Thursday by the New York Times, the director of the CIA, John Ratcliffe, said that the new videos aimed to “recruit Chinese officials to steal secrets”.
“Our agency must continue to respond to this threat urgently, creativity and grain, and these videos are only one of the ways we do this,” he said.
The CIA has used similar techniques in the past.
Videos are similar to those published online in recent years targeting Russian officials unhappy by corruption and war in Ukraine, who, according to the CIA, has managed to attract new sources.
The CIA also published a video more based on the text last year, also in Mandarin, giving instructions on agency contact via the Dark Web.
