Changes in the Rules of the Monaco Grand Prix of this year could see Fernando Alonso making an appearance of a surprise rostrum, suggests that Ted Kravitz of Sky Sports.
Alonso will align sixth for Sunday’s race, but, with two compulsory judgments (in normal circumstances), he could play in favor of the double world champion.
Fernando Alonso has changed for the return of the Monaco podium
Additional report by Thomas Maher
A veteran of more than 20 large Monaco Prix, Alonso won the race in 2006 for Renault, en route to its second title.
He also asked for the honors of the following year for McLaren, but has since honored the podium only three times; Second with Ferrari in 2011, and a year later (once again with the Scuderia), and finally second with Aston Martin in 2023 – a race he could undoubtedly have won.
But so far in 2025, there has not been a finish in the top 10, even less a podium.
It was a difficult start for the F1 2025 campaign for the 43-year-old, with his 11th place in Imola last weekend equaling his best result of the season.
Without the moment of a mid-term virtual safety car, it could have been the first Alonso points point result of the season after a stronger performance by Aston Martin.
In Monaco, the Silverstone -based team was just as competitive. With the additional joker of two compulsory stops during the Sunday race, the journalist for the Sky Sports Stands Way, Ted Kravitz, suggested that the 408 breed veteran could surprise.
“In a sense, whatever happens in the first, whatever the rounds it belongs to the second judgments, will not matter, because all that will be important is what will happen after the second judgments,” said Kravitz.
“I want Aston to be able to play this new regulation to their advantage and could be on the podium.
“And given Fernando Alonso’s unlucky so far, maybe he’s due a little luck.”

Earlier in the weekend, Alonso addressed his fortune after the disappointment in the Grand Prix of Emilia Romagne.
There, the Spaniard proclaimed himself the most unlucky driver in the world after the time of a virtual security car has dismissed his points.
“We were unlucky in many moments,” he told the media in Monaco, including Planetf1.com.
“When you are more competitive, any strategy works, any safety car is a small problem but it is not the end of the day.
“But when you are not competitive, everything that is not on your way, it removes points.
“In seven races, I think that the races that we had the opportunity to score points, many things happen; We left in the gravel, in my mistake, in Australia; In China, with three disqualified, we had fire on the brakes already in Tour 2 and we had to remove the car.
“We were not competitive for many races and a race that we are competitive and we will be in the merit points for the first time, there is the first safety car.
“In the first six races, when we were P12, nothing happens for 60 laps and we finished P12.
“These kinds of things are always frustrating.
“Well, I don’t consider myself unlucky,” he added.
“I mean, twice world champion; twice the winner of Le Mans; WEC champion; 24 hours of daytona champion… If I am unlucky, I cannot imagine the 18 or 17 other drivers here. ”
