- Car manufacturers rush to move production in the United States while Trump prices disrupt the automotive industry.
- The CEO of Lucid said that several companies had contacted the use of its Arizona factory.
- Like Rivals Tesla and Rivian, Lucid is less exposed to prices because all its production is in the United States.
President Donald Trump’s prices cause carnage in the automotive industry – but they could give a boost to a Tesla rival.
Lucid CEO Marc Winterhoff said that several car manufacturers had contacted the startup EV on the use of its Arizona factory to bypass prices on imported vehicles.
“We have noticed an interest in our manufacturing capacity in Arizona. While car manufacturers are looking for more economical capital strategies to make vehicles in the United States, we have seen several incoming requests to discuss possible cooperation,” he told investors on Tuesday during a profits.
“It is still early and the talks are preliminary, but the president and the administration want to have a solid manufacturing sector in the United States, and we are examining potential ways to take advantage of our assets,” said Winterhoff, who took up his duties as an acting CEO of Lucid in February.
The 25% prices of the Trump administration on imported cars and car parts have triggered a race so that car manufacturers move as much production in the United States as possible.
Stellantis, Volvo and Mercedes all unveiled plans to build more models in the United States to get around the prices. General Motors, which faces a 5 billion dollars of samples, said that it would compensate for certain costs by building more cars and components in the United States.
EV companies such as Tesla, Rivian and Lucid are less exposed to prices because they build all their cars for the American market locally. Lucid has a spare capacity after buying the manufacturing facilities for the Nikola electric truck startup last month.
“We have had several players who contacted us, exploring joint manufacturing in the United States, since we now have additional assets that we can operate,” said Winteroff.
Lucid published on Tuesday the profits from the first quarter lower than analysts, but maintained its objective of producing 20,000 vehicles this year despite pricing uncertainty.
