Duolingo wants to move quickly and break things about AI.
In a memo to shared employees on LinkedIn, CEO of Duolingo, Luis von Ahn, has described his plan to make the company “Ai-Stre”.
“We are looking forward to the technology is 100%perfect,” wrote Von Ahn in the note published on Monday. “We prefer to move with urgency and take occasional small shots on quality than to move slowly and miss the moment.”
The CEO has established three ways of which the company will use technology. It will “gradually” cease to use entrepreneurs for the tasks that it can do. The use of employees will be judged in the job and performance exams. And the teams will only get number of heads if they cannot automate additional work.
The replacement of manual work by AI is not a new decision for the company. At the beginning of 2024, Duolingo dismissed 10% of its contractual workers because it began to use AI to generate content. He made similar cuts linked to the AI in 2023. In the Monday memo, Von Ahn added that the AI thrust will not replace full -time employees with technology.
“Without AI, we would need decades to evolve our content to more learners. We owe our learners to obtain this content as soon as possible,” he wrote.
Last year, to highlight its use of AI, Duolingo launched one of its income calls with a segment of Lily, a chatbot based on AI based on a character with purple hair on the application.
“Over time, she will do more and more my work, and I can just retire,” said the CEO at the time.
Duolingo shares have increased by 68% in the past year, partly on the growth of its paid bonus levels. The company also diversifies language offers by testing failures and launching music lessons. Duolingo is expected to publish the first quarter results on Thursday.
Von Ahn is the last technological leader, which clearly shows that the use of AI is no longer optional.
Earlier this month, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said it was not enough of her employees to know how to use AI and that Uber implements training programs to change this. He added that learning to use AI agents to code is “will be an absolute necessity in Uber in a year”.
In a memo to employees who Tobias Lütke of Shopify Shared on social networks earlier this month, he wrote that the use of AI is “now a fundamental expectation of everyone at Shopify” and “teams must demonstrate why they cannot get what they want to do by using AI” before asking for more counting of the head. Von Ahn’s messaging Monday looked closely at Lütke’s post.
Linkedin co -founder Reid Hoffman praised Lütke’s post And said that each leader, whether they manage a small startup or a giant business, should integrate AI into their work and carry out regular checks on AI learning.
