Hundreds of flights have been canceled or delayed at Newark Liberty International Airport this weekend and Monday, while shortages of air traffic controllers persist, causing disturbances of flights to one of the country’s busiest airports.
Monday at 7 a.m., 73 flights had been canceled and 22 other delayed from Newark Liberty. On Sunday, there were 141 cancellations and 436 delays, according to flightaware.com.
United Airlines announced on Friday the elimination of nearly three dozen round-trip flights from its daily schedule in and outside Newark airport due to the continuous problem of the endowment of air traffic control.
The airline also cited the technological problems that hampered the operations of the airport last week, which included a telecommunications failure.
United is the largest carrier of Newark airport. Cutting 35 flights means reducing approximately 10% of its daily program at the airport, where the airline steals an average of 328 flights per day.
On Saturday, Governor Phil Murphy castigated the recent wave of flight delays in Newark, qualifying the disturbances “completely and completely unacceptable” and pleading for a reversal of endowment reductions at the Federal Aviation Administration.
