‘The Brutalist’ won 3 Golden Globes — how to watch the film

“The Brutalist” may be an awards season favorite, but few people have had the chance to see it.

The epic drama, which just won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Drama, is currently only available in a handful of theaters in New York and Los Angeles.

However, it will expand to more cities later this month and will likely be available for streaming later this year.

“The Brutalist” stars Adrien Brody as László Toth, a Hungarian architect who emigrates to the United States after surviving the Holocaust.

Adrien Brody plays a visionary architect, László Toth, in “The Brutalist”.

On January 5, 2025, Brody won the Golden Globe Award for Best Male Performance in a Drama Motion Picture for his role in “The Brutalist.”

During his acceptance speech, he spoke of the film’s personal importance to him and thanked his father, Elliot Brody, and mother, Sylvia Plachy, who fled Hungary in the 1950s.

The film, Brody said, “recalls my mother and my ancestor’s journey to escape the horrors of war and come to this great country.”

The film also stars Felicity Jones as László’s wife Erzsébet, as well as Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy and Stacy Martin.

Keep reading to learn more about how to watch “The Brutalist” in theaters and when it might be available to stream.

Is “The Brutalist” in theaters?

After debuting at the Venice Film Festival in September, “The Brutalist” was released in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on December 20.

On January 9, the drama will be screened more widely in several cities across the country, at select AMC theaters as well as select independent and arthouse theaters, according to the film’s official ticketing site.

The film will then be released even more widely on more than 2,000 screens later this month after Oscar nominations are announced on January 17, A24 recently told Axios.

“The Brutalist,” which runs more than three hours, is one of the few recent films to include an intermission in theatrical screenings.

The 15-minute break, included in the duration of the film, was added with the comfort of spectators in mind.

“Personally, I struggle to sit still for three and a half hours, so I needed it. And it was a public decision,” director Brady Corbet, who just won the Golden Globe for best director, told IndieWire in December.

When will “The Brutalist” air?

No release date for “The Brutalist” has yet been announced.

When the epic becomes available to stream, it will most likely be available to stream on Max.

In 2023, A24, the production and distribution company behind “The Brutalist,” signed a deal to stream A24 films exclusively on Max, HBO and Cinemax after leaving theaters, Variety reported.

In the past, times have varied between the theatrical release dates of films and their premiere on Max.

A recent A24 film, Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” became available to stream on Max in late February 2024, nearly four months after its expanded theatrical release.

On the other hand, another A24 drama, “The Iron Claw”, was released on Max almost five months after its release in US theaters.

So, it could be several months before “The Brutalist” is available to stream, but there’s a good chance it will be released on Max and HBO sometime in the first half of 2025.
