Adrien Brody plays the Hungarian immigrant and survivor of the Holocaust László Toth

The brutalist tells the story of the Hungarian immigrant and surviving the Holocaust László Tóth, who tries to rebuild his life in post-war America through his work as an architect.

The winner of Oscar, Adrien Brody, plunged deeply into his own family story for his representation of the character, reflecting on the experiences of his mother and his grandparents in the flight of their native Hungary, who, after the Second War global, became a satellite state of the Soviet Union.

“What is wonderful is that it is an opportunity for me to honor my ancestral struggles-my mother and my grandparents and the losses of flight from Hungary in the 1950s and to emigrate to the United States .

“(It is) very moving to remember the details and the difficulties they have experienced which in parallel with the lived experience of my character,” explains Brody.

The actor says that his character’s desire to create also reflects his own path as an actor.

“Any artistic person, I think, can relate to the struggle and aspirations to leave, to create a work corpus and to leave behind something great,” he said.

‘Epic length’

Relations in the film can be intimate and personal, but they are established in a backdrop which is in many ways – in particular its operating time. He is in the process of more than three and a half hours – something that could repel certain moviegoers.

But director Brady Corbet thinks that the length of the brutalist should really not dissuade the public.

“For me, I think the length of a film is similar to the length of a book, a double album, a painting with a large canvas.

“I love small portraits and I love Anselm Kiefer (a German artist known for his large -scale facilities). There is a space for both, you know. And in the end, especially because the film has A intermission is only 100 minutes on each side, so it’s not so bad. “

Felicity Jones plays Tóth’s wife, Erzsébet

Felicity Jones, who plays Tóth’s wife, Erzsébet, says that she spends a lot of time looking for realistic female characters who are more than simple weak ramifications of their husband.

“I spend most of my life looking for scripts, trying to find decent characters to play. It’s a large part of that,” she explains.

“I have to find someone who has a kind of cum or who fights in him. A certain feeling of challenge is so key, so when I read the script, it was absolute obvious.

“I thought this woman was great. But … they are rare, of course. When you get something like that, you catch her with both hands.”

Guy Pearce plays the rich industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren

In the film, Tóth is hired by the rich industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren to design and build a vast project in tribute to his deceased mother. Van Buren, played by Guy Pearce, is a man who is impressed by the architect’s talent. A useful parallel therefore for the actor.

“I guess yes,” admits the Australian. “I really admire Adrien and his work. I think he is an extraordinary actor.

“It was really interesting how Adrien played his role. He plays a man who has almost more sense of self than Van Buren, which was a great thing for me to work because I think Van Buren, even If he admires László, he is probably condescending from him.

“He probably expects him to be more subordinate than him, so it was a great dynamic between the two of us.”
