After abandoning a 2-1 decision in Portugal in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League, the German boss Julian Nagelsmann told ZDF (via kicker) Why he thought things collapsed:
As a reason for defeat, he did not quote the absence of key players, but rather the lack of presence in possession and the missing “bite” when it is out of possession. For this last reason, his team was also able to apply the usual pressing seen in previous matches against the very versatile Portuguese team. Even after the goal, the kicks, where the German team was able to settle, they could not take control. “If you play man to man and individual players do not give 100%, do not press, then you are in number,” said the national coach.
When this side is missing, it becomes difficult to follow the “best teams”. This is because nations and opponents of Portugal have more “technically gifted risk takers”. “We also have a few, but the Portuguese have six or seven,” said Nagelsmann. Consequently, his team must always be “100% lit”. “It is a good learning experience from which many prizes can be taken,” said the 37 -year -old player.
Although it was, in fact, a learning experience the involvement that players were not fully concentrated or did not give them, which is a critical vacuum for a coach to perceive in post-match comments.
The German has work to do before the 2026 World Cup and some of these problems to which Nagelsmann has referenced must be resolved earlier, rather than later.
