Qatargate was revealed for the first time at the end of 2022, when the former socialist deputy Pier Antonio Panzeri, the parliamentary assistant Francesco Giorgi and other key figures such as the vice-president of the Parliament Eva Killit were arrested in a series of dramatic members involving bags of treasury and lurid interference land.
Belgian authorities will have to wait for Parliament to go through a long procedure before being able to fully investigate the two new deputies. The lifting of their immunity will lead the president of the Parliament Metsola to announce the judicial request as soon as possible Monday during a plenary session.
The European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee will then give the two deputies to say that their part and their rubber are the measure before putting it back to the whole plenary of the legislators for a final vote.
If they are approved by all deputies later this month, the Belgian authorities will be able to continue the accusations against socialist legislators.
Once contacted, a Metsola spokesperson refused to comment on the current procedure. A spokesperson for the Socialist & Democrats group did not respond to a request for comments.
