Scarlett Johansson made major splashes in Cannes with its first director “Eleanor The Great”. In competition in the United Nations competition, the film – with June Squibb, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Erin Kellyman – earned Johansson and she threw a standing ovation on Tuesday.
Johansson was escorted by his all-powerful agent and CEO of CAA, Bryan Lourd. Her husband, the anchor of “Weekend Update” Colin Jost, arrived solo and got involved in the leaders of Sony Pictures Classics Tom Bernard and Michael Barker. Adrien Brody, winner of the best actor in title Oscar, and his partner Georgina Chapman also attended, chatting with Jost.
Presenting the film, Johansson said that the first body in Cannes is “really a dream come true”.
“When you make a film that is an independent film like this, nobody does it for money-surprise, surprise,” she continued. “Really, all those who gathered for this film met because they loved the story, the script. It is a film about a lot of things: it is a question of friendship, it is sorrow, it is forgiveness. And I think that these are all the themes that we can use a lot more of these days.”
“Eleanor the Great” sees Squibb playing the mind and proudly embarrassing, Eleanor Morgenstein, who after a devastating loss, tells a story that takes his own dangerous life.
After the end of screening for delighted applause, Johansson gave Squibb a tender hug that seemed to last several minutes. She later described her main star as “really inspiring”. She also called Kellyman as “absolute revelation” and said that she was “so excited that the world meets her”.
“It is a film which, in my opinion, is historic and also very opportune now, and I therefore hope that you all wear it with you the way I transport Eleanor with me,” said Johansson when applause ended.
Johansson is in double function this year in Cannes, because it is also part of the bumper star of “The Phenician Scheme” by Wes Anderson. She is also in a way a veteran of Cannes, having already attended the latest film by Anderson “Asteroid City” in 2023.
Johansson produced “Eleanor the Great” with Jonathan Lia and Keenan Flynn for these photos, Kara Durrett and Jessamine Burgum for Pinky Promised, and Celine Cétratray and Trudie Styler by Maven Screen Media.
