Ljubljana, Slovenia – A woman was in critical condition Wednesday after an attack by bear in a wooded area outside the Slovenia capital, Ljubljana, the police announced.
The attack took place on Tuesday on the edge of the Skofljica forest, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of the capital, police said.
The bear withdrew into the forest after the attack and the police advised Skofljica residents to stay away and be careful.
The incident only intervened a few days after the authorities approved the slaughter of 206 brown bears, whose population in the region increased to around 1,000 bears.
The little Alpine nation of just over 2 million people is largely wooded in many protected areas. Authorities occasionally approve of the babbling of bears or wolf despite strong opposition from animal rights groups.
Two bear attacks against people were recorded in 2022, according to the official STA news agency in Slovenia.
