The owner and the crew of a luxury Superyacht who sank off the coast of Sicily, killing the technological entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others, were not aware of the wind speeds of more than 73 MPH could make him switch, according to an interim report.

The modeling ordered after the disaster indicates gusts of this speed striking the side of the Bayesian, when it had its sails down and the on -board center, “would probably train” its capacity.

The Directorate of the Survey of Marine Accidents in the United Kingdom (Maib), leader of the international investigation, Said winds of more than 80 MPH “violently” hit the ship, making him flood in seconds.

He Sun near the city of Porticello on August 19 of last year in time, with water reports.

Seven of the 22 people on board were killed, including Mr. Lynch, 59, and his 18 -year -old daughter Hannah.

The investigators say that the yacht was overthrown at an angle of 90 degrees within 15 seconds at 4:06 am local time, dropping people, furniture and bulk items on the bridge.

“There was no indication of flooding inside the Bayesian until the water arrives on the starboard rails and, in a few seconds, enter the internal spaces in the stairwells,” said the report.

MaiB’s main marine accident inspector Andrew Moll said the situation was “irreparable” once the yacht tilted beyond 70 degrees.

The yacht had its sails down and the center of the onset when it sank.

Maib commanded modeling from the University of Southampton to examine the stability of the yacht under these conditions.

He indicated that – if the wind was blowing directly through the beam or the side of the boat – the wind speeds greater than 73 MPH were sufficient to tip the boat and “it is possible” the yacht was also vulnerable to the lower wind speeds, said Maib.

But this information was not included in the stability information book on board and “therefore, these vulnerabilities were also unknown to the owner or the Bayesian crew,” said the report.

The Maib is investigating the incident while the Bayesian was recorded in the United Kingdom. No date has been set when its final report is published.

He said his report was based on “a limited amount of verified evidence” because a criminal investigation by Italian authorities limited access to the wreck.

An operation to raise the 56-meter seabed ship was interrupted this weekend after the death of a diver while working on the wreckage. The work was due to resume Thursday.

The report exposes more detail on how the sinking took place.

Investigators say that the yacht sailed to the site where it sank the day before, to “shelter” the planned thunderstorms. The sails were rolled at the time.

Wind speed was “no more than eight nodes (9mph)” at 3:00 am – about an hour before the incident. About 55 minutes later, he increased to 30 knots (34.5 MPH) and he accelerated at 70 knots (80.6 MPH) at 4:06 am when the yacht changed.

While the storm intensified, several crew members worked in response to the conditions. The hand of the bridge went to the deck to close the yacht windows.

Five people were injured “either by falling or by things that fall on them” and the hand of the bridge was “thrown into the sea,” said the report.

Two of the yacht guests used furniture drawers “as an improvised scale” to escape their cabin, he adds.

The recovery process should take several weeks

Dr. Simon Boxall, oceanographer at Southampton University, said the Bayesian was “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.

“The priorities for the crew would have been to close the listening and the doors, which they did,” he told the BBC.

This means that speculation on the flood of water because everything was open is “obviously not the case”.

“The next priority would have been to start the engines – so they would have a certain handling to position themselves in a storm – then lift the anchor, which the crew did, but it takes time,” he added.

“It’s not like a car where you jump and turn the key. It would take 5 or 10 minutes before you can start the engines with a ship of this size.”

Survivors escaped the Bayesian life raft and were rescued by a small boat sent from another neighboring yacht, the report said.

Mike Lynch was a leading figure in the British technology industry, where his support for prosperous companies led him to be nicknamed the British equivalent of the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates.

But the last years of his life have been consumed by a long-standing legal dispute that has made him have extradited controversial to the United States.

Investigation procedures in the United Kingdom examine the death of Mr. Lynch and his daughter, as well as the president of Morgan Stanley International Bank Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer, who were all British nationals.

The American lawyer Chris Mortvillo and his wife Neda Morto also died in the sinking, with the National Canadian-Antiguan Recaldo Thomas, who worked as chief of the yacht.

Fifteen people managed to escape on a rescue canoe, including Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares.
