Brad Bondi defends his campaign to manage the DC bar among the worries of Washington’s lawyers on his sister’s leading role in the Trump administration.
Some Washington lawyers have raised concerns concerning the Bondi DC bar campaign, while the body of ethics against lawyers linked to the president is linked to the president Donald Trump.
Bondi said in a statement on Friday that his efforts to present himself to the presidency of the DC bar began months before the November elections and are not linked to national policy. His sister, Attorney General Bondiwas announced as Trump’s candidate on November 21 and was confirmed on February 5.
“The bar has a non -partisan mission, which I intend to protect with vigilance against any pressure to politicize it,” said Bondi, partner of Paul Hastings.
Brad Bondi was publicly appointed in February as a candidate for the president of the DC bar. Alicia Long, deputy chief of Ed Martin, the choice of Trump, to direct the American prosecutor’s office in Washington. If they were elected, the two would be among the 20 lawyers who sit on the Council of Governors of the Bar.
The officials and members of the current and ancient bar said that if it were elected, Bondi would not oversee the disciplinary procedure, and any other influence that he could have on this work would be tempered by other bar leaders or the Court of Appeal of the Columbia District.
The elections to DC Bar begin on April 15 and take place until June 4.
The concerns concerning the two lawyers intervene as democrats of the Senate judicial committee on Thursday, filed a complaint for fault with the disciplinary lawyer of the bar against Martin, alleging that he had abused his position while dealing with the cases of January 6 Capitol Riot.
If it is elected, Bondi – through its role in the Council of Governors of the Bar – would help to recommend members for the Board of Directors of Professional Responsibility, a panel that examines the disciplinary conclusions against Washington lawyers. The final disciplinary decisions are made by the Court of Appeal of the Local District of Columbia, which appoints the members of the Board of Professional Responsibilities.
“The disciplinary system operates independently of the DC bar, and we have no control or influence on cases which are the subject of an investigation or to continue by the office of a disciplinary lawyer,” said Robert Spagnoletti, CEO of the DC bar.
The Governors’ Council also approves the bar budget, including the money set aside for the disciplinary council office. Any conflict on these funds is taken to the DC Court of Appeal, and the former managers of the bar say that they do not remember that this has ever happened.
The president also has an influence on who chairs the permanent committees of the bar, which include panels supervising the budget and investments of the bar. The treasurer helps supervise the budget, but changes would require the approval of the majority of the Governors’ Council.
David Cole, professor of law at the University of Georgetown, said that even if disciplinary procedures are not managed by the leadership of the bar, he is still concerned that the process could be manipulated as a decision to reprisals due to the cases against Trump’s allies. He raised the possibility that accusations will be brought against Washington lawyers who worked on proceedings against the first actions of administration of Trump.
“It is a concern that they seek to politicize the disciplinary process and to politicize the bar more generally,” said Cole, the former national legal director of ACLU.
The Disciplinary Council office, accommodated in the bar, charged Trump’s allies for their efforts to cancel the former president Joe BidenVictory in the elections in 2020. The former prosecutor of the Ministry of Justice Trump Jeffrey Clark and a single lawyer of Trump Rudy Giuliani are among those who have seen their law licenses be examined by this office.
Charles Work, who was one of the first presidents of the bar, said that he feared that a person linked to a senior Trump administration leading the group to give the impression of the partisanry, even if Bondi takes no openly support.
“This is important because belonging to the DC bar is required,” said work.
Long did not immediately return a request for comments.
Friday, Bondi underlined the previous stays in the steering posts of the bars and said that he had spent more than 20 years working on the cases of DC sponsored by DC Bar.
He said his goal at the bar is on “efficiency and practical advantages”, which would include more educational programs and expanded pro bono opportunities.
“It is not about politics; I run to help strengthen our profession and support members of the bar, whatever their beliefs or history, “said Bondi.
Bondi was elected twice to sit on the steering committee of its community of corporate law, finance and securities, according to his law firm website. He appears against Diane A. Seltzer, a job lawyer.
Bondi, a long -standing lawyer in white collar, currently co -chairs the surveys of Paul Hasting and the practice of defense of white passes. He was recently hired by the personality of YouTube “MrBeast” Jimmy Donaldson and a group of investors for legal advice on the attempted purchase of Tiktok Inc., and also gave advice at Trump Ally and Tesla, Inc. by Trump Ally and Billionaire Elon Musk.
Long, a current member of the Council of Governors of the Barreau Association, is a career prosecutor for the office of the United States prosecutor and former staff member for the senator for the senator for the senator John Thune (Rs.d.), now the majority leader.
Bondi and Long have named themselves to stand at the posts, according to Spagnoletti. The candidates are then examined by the bar appointment of the bar, which selects two to three candidates for each open place.
