The author of ‘The Bridgertons Chronicles’ defends his queer storyline against his homophobic fans

While many The Bridgerton Chronicles Fans loved it when Francesca Bridgerton met her husband John’s cousin, Michaela Stirling, and immediately seemed to fall in love, others aren’t too happy about the change from the book.

In an episode of the recently released third season of the hit Netflix series, Francesca (Hannah Dodd) got married to John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin (Victor Alli). When she goes to spend time with her family, she meets her cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza) and the two have an instant, romantic connection and it is heavily implied that they will reunite.

In the The Bridgerton Chronicles books, especially in When he was badFrancesca also met her husband’s cousin and fell in love, but it was with Michael Stirling, a man.

Some fans are furious about the change and don’t believe a queer romance has a place in a period series (even if the same series has a diverse cast and uses modern music).

“You are allowing them to completely butcher your work,” one viewer wrote. “In what universe would Francesca have been allowed to marry a woman in the 1800s? I’m all for gays, but completely changing Michael’s gender to be ‘edgy’ and ‘cool’ didn’t help. no sense in the dated period in which these stories take place.”

“You broke my heart,” said another. “I will cry for a beautiful story that will no longer be told.”

Today, the author of the book defends this change.

The Bridgerton Chronicles author Jess Quinn wrote on her Instagram that she is “deeply committed to The Bridgerton Chronicles the world is becoming more diverse and inclusive,” but that changing the gender of a main character required more thought.

“I trust Shondaland’s vision for The Bridgerton Chronicles, but I wanted to make sure we could stay true to the spirit of the book and the characters,” she continued. “Jess and I talked about it at length. More than one time. I made it clear that it was extremely important to me that Francesca’s undying love for John was shown on screen.”

“I am convinced now that when Francesca gets it The Bridgerton Chronicles season, it will be the most emotional and heartbreaking story of the series, just like When he was bad has always been the real heartbreaker of The Bridgerton Chronicles book series,” she said.

“Thank you to the readers and fans for your comments,” Quinn added. “I am grateful for your understanding and touched by your deep commitment to the characters of the The Bridgerton Chronicles world. I ask that you give me and the Shondaland team some confidence as we move forward. I think we’ll end up with two stories, one on the page and one on the screen, and they’ll both be beautiful and moving.”

Back when the season 3 finale first aired on Netflix, Variety Quinn asked. on whether or not The Bridgerton Chronicles diversity and inclusion will open up to queer characters.

“When we started talking about queer representation on the show, we started by discussing that it was a show about happily ever after and that we’re not interested in queer trauma – that we really want to see queer joy.” she says. “And if we want to tell a queer story, we’d like to find a way for there to be a happily ever after.”
