Steve Smith announced his day -to -day international game retirement after appearing in the format 170 times for his country.
The shock came after driving Australia to defeat in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy Tuesday evening while filling the skipper Pat Cummins.
Smith, 35, will continue to play in T20 tests and matches for his country as he leaves the door open for a possible appearance at the 2028 Olympic Games, where game 20 on will be presented for the first time.
“It looks at the right time to make room (for young players),” said Smith.
“It was a great walk and I loved every minute.
“There have been so many incredible moments and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great time with the many fantastic teammates who shared the trip.

“Now it’s a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the ODI 2027 World Cup, so it looks like at the right time to make room.
“The test cricket remains a priority and I really look forward to the final of the world testing championship, in the Antilles in winter and then in England at home.
“I feel that I still have a lot to contribute to this scene.
Smith scored 5,800 points on 170 ODI games for Australia, with an average of 43.28 with a high score of 164, 12 centuries and 35 half-century in its name. This put him sixth in Australia, at the top of the hundred scorers in the male ODI.
He also took 28 counters as a bowling player at an average of 34.67 with the best figures of 3/16 and notably helped Australia win victories during their winning campaigns of the 2015 World Cup and 2023.
On Tuesday, he produced a brilliant 73 of the 96 balls in his last 50 rounds to help stabilize his team during their defeat in the semi-final of the Champions Cup against India.
Sydney Morning Herald reports claim that Smith has conversed with the base of selectors on a series base in series on his future – the Australian captain having been ambivalent on his future with the 50 out of 50 side.

“Steve has repeatedly declared that he was approaching the rest of his playing career on a series base by series, a position that has not changed and that an Australia cricket supports.
“ His record as a striker through 170 games is exemplary and to leave the format as a double winner of the World Cup cement his heritage as one of the great players of Australians Odi.
“From the point of view of the NSP, Steve remains fully committed to testing cricket and is a member and a leader of this team.”
Exclusion from Cricket ODI Training your game calendar means that Smith will be cooler to contribute to the Australian test and T20 formats.
This is a busy winter for the male national team, who will go to London first for their final of the World CPI testing championship against South Africa, before going to the Antilles for a series of three games before this summer.
