The ASD has just published a security warning to the Americans of “juice jacking” in airports – protect yourself with it

At the airport, you close the second “low battery, now loads on your phone and you finally give in. You catch your load cable and plug into a public USB port in the departure lounge. According to the TSA, you may have just made an expensive mistake.

The Security Administration Transportation (TSA) issued a warning concerning a cyber attack technique known as “Juice Jacking” before the first season of summer trips.

“Pirates can install malware on USB ports (we have been told that this is called” JUICE / PORT JACKING “), the TSA job said. “Juice Jacking” is the place where hackers handle public load terminals with hidden devices to steal data or install malware on your device when using a USB load cable to connect directly.

Does not miss

This can happen in airports, hotels, shopping centers or even public transportation centers – wherever a USB port is available. And once your device is compromised, attackers can be able to:

  • Access your banking and payment applications

  • Install spy software or keyloggers

  • Check or wipe your device remotely

  • Steal photos, contacts or authentication codes with two factors

Cybersecurity experts also warn of using public load cables, which can be planted or modified to transport malicious software. It is a low effort and high reward attack – especially in places where travelers are distracted, bored and desperate for juice.

How can you protect yourself against “JUICE JACKING”?

The solution is quite simple: the TSA says: “Bring your power brick or your battery that conforms to the TSA and connect.” The sockets cannot be handled in the same way, protecting your device.

If you have to make juice with a load port, extinguishing your phone before connecting it is another off-measure. You can also get a USB data blocker (colloquially known as USB condom) to do the work. These devices block data transfer, allowing you to load safely.

In general, do not forget to avoid making sensitive banking services or online purchases in public spaces using free free Wi-Fi. Use a VPN in public spaces to stay completely secure if you need to connect to Wi-Fi.

Your phone is more than another device – it’s your wallet and, in many ways, an archive of your life in one juicy place for pirates. Protect it and protect yourself.
