The Los Angeles 2028 games will include the Olympic beginnings of the 50m rear, 50m breaststroke and 50m swimming butterfly, a 4x100m relay of mixed genre on track and field and a mixed team event in artistic gymnastics, among other events.
The International Olympic Committee approved the competition program for the Los Angeles Games on Wednesday – a record of 351 medal events, 22 more than at the Paris 2024 Games.
“Today marks a monumental step in the pursuit of La28 to welcome the largest collection of athletes ever gathered on the world’s largest scene in the world,” said Janet Evans, director of chief athletes of 2028 said in a press release.
For the first time in Olympic history, there will be more female athlete quota spots (5,655) than male athlete quota spots (5,543) on the 36 sports.

In swimming, the events of 50m rear, the breast and the butterflies have taken place at the biennial world championships since 2001. The 50m freestyle, which made its debut at the 1988 Seoul Games, was the only 50 -meter event of the Olympic program so far.
On the track, the mixed 4x100m made its debut in the major championship in the first world championship of ultimate athletics in 2026 before its Olympic beginnings in 2028. A mixed 4x400m – with two runners and two male team runners – made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 matches.
The competition format for the new event of the mixed gymnastics team will be finalized and announced on a later date. The IOC has set a chronology for the end of May.
Other changes include additional mixed -up teams in archery, golf and table tennis, dividing the combined sport climbing event into separate medal events for the block and lead and a seventh female boxing weight division to match the amount of men.
The number of teams in women’s and male football tournaments will be returned. Women will have 16 teams for the 2028, and men will have 12. The Olympic women’s tournament has no age restrictions, while the male tournament was traditionally for U23 players with three sur-aging exceptions.
For the first time, all team sports will have at least the same number of female teams as male teams. Two female teams were added to water polo, giving the female event and the male event the same number of teams (12).
Female and male 3×3 basketball tournaments will add four teams per sex, making 12 teams.
In archery, a mixed team event has been added to a new – complex – discipline – to join individual and team events in Recurve.
In rowing, the female solo (CW1X), the male solo (CM1X) and the double mixed eculls (CX2X) will make its debut at Coastal Beach Sprint, a discipline which was previously confirmed for the inclusion of 2028.
