José Mourinho has delivered a glowing assessment of his compatriot Ruben Amorim, saying the Sporting Lisbon coach would be “capable of coaching at any club”.

The 39-year-old is in talks to take over at Liverpool and West Ham. Last week it emerged that the Sporting boss had traveled to London to speak with West Ham representatives over the decision to succeed David Moyes.

Although his move to Liverpool seems almost off the table, with the Reds appearing to complete a deal to appoint Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, it also appears that a potential move to join the Hammers is also on the wane.

Despite this, he is still widely regarded as one of the best young managers in European football at the moment, with former Man United, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Mourinho heaping praise on his compatriot.

In an interview with Mais Futebol, Mourinho said: “It’s also a question I shouldn’t answer, but what can I tell you? I love him (Amorim) as a person, I love him as a coach.

“I think he is capable of coaching in any league and he is capable of coaching in any club. But he is in a good league and at a great club.

“It’s his decision and it will be up to the clubs who want him or don’t want him or who want to convince him, with more or less arguments.

“What is clear to me is that I like the person and I like the coach.”

Earlier this week, Amorim apologized for flying to hold talks with West Ham. It came at a critical time of the season for Sporting, who are aiming for the league title and still have three games to play this season.

They dropped points in the title race against Porto on Sunday evening, after both teams drew 2-2.

Amorim apologized and admitted it was a “mistake” to travel to London last week.

‘It was a mistake. The timing was not good at all,” admitted Amorim after flying off in such a critical period of the season.

“I always ask my players to be respectful, and I haven’t been, even though I informed the club beforehand.”

“I am truly sorry and I apologize to the fans, the club and the players.”
