The storm began to take shape Monday, unleashing damaging tornadoes and thunderstorm winds in Louisiana and Mississippi while generating heavy rain in the Mid-South and Tennessee Valley.
Travelers will be most affected by this storm Tuesday and Tuesday evening when it brings torrential rain to drought-prone areas of the Appalachians and mid-Atlantic, thunderstorms to the Southeast, and snow to the interior of the northeast.
On Wednesday, the worst weather will shift to New England, where mountain rain and snow could disrupt travel plans. Some showers are also possible along the southeast coast and across Florida.
Once Thanksgiving arrives, the weather is expected to settle down across most of the country, except for the northern Rockies and adjacent High Plains. There, a fairly significant snowstorm, supported by a blast of cold air, is brewing.
Heading into the weekend, the chances of another disruptive storm in the East have diminished compared to a few days ago, but rain is possible along the northern Gulf Coast and Florida .

Atlanta- Showers and storms are a good bet through Tuesday and Tuesday evening, potentially delaying flights to this travel hub. A thunderstorm could be locally severe as highs reach the mid 60s and about an inch of rain falls. It’s cooler on Wednesday and Thanksgiving, but it’s not expected to rain.
Casper, Wyoming. — Looking for a white Thanksgiving? Wyoming is a place to be. Winter storm watches are lifted for much of the state, with 2 to 4 inches expected Thursday at low elevations and 6 to 12 at high elevations. Snow showers ease Friday morning after temperatures fell to the teens and single digits Thursday evening.
Denver — Dry weather is expected through Thursday evening, when snow showers are expected to develop as the sun sets. Periodic snowfall is forecast through Friday, when several inches could fall with highs in the 20s. The snow is expected to taper off by the weekend as temperatures slowly moderate.
Destin, Florida — A risk of severe thunderstorms persists through much of Tuesday. There is a risk of damaging winds and possibly a tornado in the area. Highs on Tuesday will be in the mid 70s, while up to an inch of rain falls Tuesday evening. It will be mostly cloudy and cooler on Wednesday and Thanksgiving.
Detroit — Periods of rain last until Tuesday evening. About a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain is forecast. The sun returns Wednesday and for Thanksgiving, with highs in the mid-40s.
Montpelier, Vermont — A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect due to a wintry mix of precipitation. Snow is expected to fall much of Tuesday night, with lows below freezing and several inches likely. Snow could change to freezing rain and rain Wednesday, bringing a sloppy mess and temperatures near 40. Precipitation should stop before it gets colder for Thanksgiving and Friday.
New York City – Rain develops as the sun sets Tuesday and continues heavily at times overnight. Rainfall of approximately 1 to 2 inches is likely in the metro area and on Long Island. The rain stops Wednesday morning as windy conditions take over. Lots of sunshine for Thanksgiving, with highs near 50.
Portland, Maine — A mix of rain and snow develops Tuesday evening, likely changing to full rain with time. Some slippery spots are possible as lows settle in near freezing. Rain falls most of the day Wednesday, with 1 to 2 inches forecast. It ends Wednesday evening ahead of a mostly sunny Thanksgiving with highs near 50.
Tampa — Although Tuesday will be mostly dry, there is a chance for showers or thunderstorms to pass through Wednesday as a cold front passes through. Thanksgiving is dry and pleasant with highs in the 70s, but rain could approach the Florida peninsula on Friday as a weak storm meanders through the Gulf of Mexico. It could spread some rain to the Southeast coast and Carolinas by Saturday.
Washington- Freezing, windswept rain falls most of Tuesday night. The rain can be heavy at times, especially in the late afternoon and evening. About 2 inches are expected. The forecast calls for clear but windy weather Wednesday, then a mostly sunny Thanksgiving with a high in the mid-50s.
