Ashton played in the top flight for Norwich, West Ham and England, before injury ended his career abruptly.

The former striker joined talkSPORT Drive and heaped praise on the Chelsea icon.

He said: “I always thought, especially towards the end of my career, that Didier Drogba came to the Premier League and I immediately thought… damn it.

” I can not do that. Now teams will want to play that way. Teams are going to expect their centre-forward to do what he did, he did it all. Absolutely everything.

“He was big and strong, and fast, he had great ability. He could hold the ball and play, direct the channels, he could find himself at the end of a clearance and do something with it, smart in possession, and could score goals.

“There’s no way I can do that. There was a period at West Ham where I came back from injury and came back to the team, Alan Curbishley was the manager and he wanted to play with one up front.

“I hardly played. Carlton Cole and Bobby Zamora played that role much more than me because he wanted a player who could do all that. They were better than me at that.

“I had different attributes, when you had two of you maybe you could split that and maybe have one that had one strong point and one that had the others.”

And the former Ivory Coast international responded to talkSPORT’s clip of Ashton’s praise.

“I have become a different player from what I was in France.”
