Texas kite surfer rescued while clinging to wood debris off Gulf Coast


A kitesurfer was rescued off the Gulf Coast of Texas on Saturday afternoon after becoming stranded without a life jacket, according to the Coast Guard.

Someone called 911 shortly after noon to report a man holding a piece of wood in the water near Galveston Bay.

Two Coast Guard rescue vessels were dispatched to rescue the man, who was floating near Galveston Bay without a life jacket.

Two Coast Guard lifeboats were dispatched to the scene and pulled the man out of the water before transporting him to the fire department for treatment.

“Everyone should use a life jacket regardless of what activities you have planned on the water,” Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeff Wideman said in a statement.

“Life jackets provide buoyancy and high visibility, making it easier for search and rescue teams to locate you in the water.”
