NEW YORK — Texas Governor Greg Abbott was in New York for a Republican gala on Thursday, faced with criticism regarding the bus transport of migrants to our region.

The latest figures released by Texas officials in March show that the state now has has transported more than 105,000 migrants to sanctuary cities since 2022and the topic was the focus of Thursday’s event.

“When we started the busing operation, he was heading to one place. He was there on purpose because, remember, until now, neither Joe Biden nor the border czar had actually gone to border to see the chaos they had caused,” Abbott said.

Abbott, whose name has been floated as a possible vice president in the upcoming presidential election, wasted no time talking about the influx of migrants entering the country.

“We were only sending them to Washington, D.C., and literally, out of nowhere, Mayor Adams started criticizing me for sending them to New York,” Abbott said. “So after a while I was like, God, if I’m going to get any criticism, I’ll get the credit.”

According to Texas state data, authorities have transported more than 105,000 migrants to sanctuary cities since August 2022, including 39,000 migrants transported by bus to New York; this represents more than 20% of the number of migrants arriving in New York since last spring.

“I will offer him a stay at one of the (Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers), so he can see what he has created and understand how we treat people with dignity and respect which he should have demonstrated,” Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday.

The mayor has publicly accused Abbott of spreading the migrant crisis to other cities.

In front of the Hilton hotel where the fundraiser was being held, dozens of people demonstrated.

“We are protesting the entire GOP,” said Luba Cortes of Make the Road NY. “Communities will come together to continue to say that immigrants are not political pawns.”

According to city officials, Abbott’s team has not responded to any calls from the Adams administration since sending migrants here to New York.
