Texas Family Christmas Lights Raises $80,000 for Make-A-Wish

A young man named Jordan Maywald has been tending to his family’s Christmas decorations since he was just nine years old. living in the south reported Thursday.

Every year since then, the 23-year-old has added more and more to the incredible display of light that has made their Austin, Texas property a major vacation tradition.

“It started very small, just a few little things in our front yard,” he told the magazine. “Over the years I have extended much of our property and it now covers approximately 3.5 acres.”

In 2019, the Maywald Christmas Light Display won ABC’s Great Christmas Light Fight. “At the time, I was the youngest champion in show history, and I still am,” Jordan explained.

However, the project was not meant to win an award because for the past seven years the family has used their exhibit to raise money for Make-A-Wish Central and South Texas.

This time around, they welcomed over 15,000 people and raised over $80,000 which will be used to grant ten wishes.

The Maywalds made the fundraiser announcement in a social media post last week, along with a photo of them holding the giant check:

“To date, the exhibit has raised nearly $200,000 and granted 27 wishes. Every time a wish is granted, Jordan adds a reindeer to the mix,” said the Life article read.

Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas said they are grateful to Jordan and his family for working so hard to create the exhibit:

“Helping these children is what Christmas means to us,” the young man said. “We will continue to set up our exhibition each year to help grant life-changing wishes!”

He prefers to build most of the displays himself and spends months before Christmas searching online for vintage decorations. The highlight of the 2021 exhibit was a 17-foot-tall Santa Claus.

Social media users praised the Maywalds for the fundraiser, with one person writing, “Wow, that’s amazing! Love the display and your mission! Can’t wait for next year!!!”

“What a blessing the Maywald family is to all of us,” another commented.
