Texans player speaks to coach after shoving coach after kickoff against Chiefs in NFL divisional round loss

Kris Boyd got off to a rough start Saturday in the 23-14 AFC Divisional Round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Boyd, the Texans cornerback, shoved special teams coach Frank Ross after being penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct on the opening kickoff of Saturday’s game.

Boyd’s penalty came after picking off Nikko Remigio on his 63-yard kickoff return. It appears Boyd was frustrated because the Chiefs recovered the fumble, and he responded by throwing his helmet onto the field of play, resulting in a penalty. It appeared Ross was upset with Boyd for not trying to get the ball after he took it away, which led to the altercation. The return and subsequent penalty put the ball on the Texans’ 13-yard line.

Despite the change, Boyd was not benched for his actions. Boyd addressed the incident after the game, confirming that his frustration stemmed from the Texans not recovering the fumble and admitting responsibility for not only costing his team 15 yards, but also establishing physical contact with his coaching position. He knows he let his emotions get the best of him.

“It’s not in my character. I love everyone here. I love my coaches. I don’t disrespect anyone,” Boyd said (via Pro Football Talk). “I love Frank, I’m a God-fearing man, I respect everyone… It’s a small thing that happened in 10 seconds. It’s football. I don’t disrespect anyone .It’s not my character.”
