Tesla gets approval for Gigafactory Berlin expansion in Germany

Tesla received approval for the expansion of Gigafactory Berlin, its production facility in Germany, after a meeting between community members and local authorities held on Thursday.

The meeting took place in the Hangelsberg district of Grünheid under police protection, as protests against the expansion have continued since the weekend. Other opponents of the expansion are living in the forest surrounding the factory, in tree houses, in protest.

Community members voiced potential concerns about the factory expansion at Thursday’s meeting, but local officials chose to approve Tesla’s wishes.

Community Concerns

Several citizens expressed concerns about a larger Tesla factory footprint and said during Thursday’s meeting that they disagreed with more manufacturing space and other items the automaker automobile needed.

One said the plans were designed to make “an industrial giant feel at home” but expressed concerns about how local residents should feel, arguing they should also be comfortable. “We renounce good health and any influence.” His concerns were met with applause from others.

Others argued that the expansion violated the Basic Law and human rights. “I can assure you that you will no longer have a good life here as a municipal representative if you agree today,” they said.

Let’s talk about the protests

Although the protests are ongoing and are one of the highest-profile elements of the potential expansion, local officials would not comment. However, Mayor Arne Christiani said he was grateful to local firefighters and other emergency responders for keeping things moving.

Tesla presentation at the meeting

Tesla CEO Riederer von Paar was on hand to answer questions from politicians and residents. One of these was storage of built vehicles/inventories and plans for future capacity if the expansion was approved. Additionally, von Paar spoke of using the railway, which was one of the main elements of the expansion, instead of typical road logistics.

“We could also handle a million vehicles per road; we want to do it by rail,” he said.

This work will be supplemented in the future by 40,000 employees and potentially two million units of annual capacity. Von Paar confirmed at the meeting that the current installed capacity still stands at half a million vehicles per year.

The vote

In total, 19 people were able to vote. To decide which way to vote, they took into account more than 300 comments from local residents. There were two different votes: one for an urban development contract and another for the expansion itself.

11 of the 19 voted yes to the Urban Development Contract. Mayor Christiani voted in favor of the contract. The same number of 19 also voted in favor of Tesla’s expansion, with Mayor Christiani also giving a thumbs up.

Six voted against enlargement, and two abstained.
