Tesla electric vehicle sales in the United States are worse than the media is currently reporting. This is partly because Tesla hides its sales.
Here are more precise data.
Today, you may see many titles on Tesla American sales on the basis of the US electric vehicle sales report from COX Automotive 2025.
The main problem of this report is that it is a complete estimate with regard to Tesla, the largest manufacturer of electric vehicles in the United States.
Of all the main car manufacturers, Tesla is the only one that does not break sales by region or even the model.
For comparison, here is an Ford US sales report compared to a Tesla global sales report (its only delivery report):

Because Tesla is so opaque with its sales, analysts often rely on reports like Cox, which are also estimates.
The COX report quoted in the media today claims that Tesla delivered 128,100 vehicles in the United States to T1 2025 – down 8.6% compared to T1 2024.
It is despite sales of electric vehicles of 10% in total in the first quarter.

Cox estimate seems quite high. The best way to understand Tesla’s deliveries to the United States is to make deliveries according to registration data on all other markets where Tesla sells vehicles worldwide, which are quite precise, and subtract this number of the reported world deliveries from Tesla.
For the first quarter, Tesla declared 336,681 deliveries worldwide, and Tesla inscriptions in all markets, with the exception of the United States and Canada, totaled 212,024 vehicles (via Troyteslilly).
This would mean that Tesla delivered around 124,657 vehicles in the United States and Canada in the first quarter of 2025.
This already represents around 3,500 less deliveries than the COX estimate, but it includes Canadian deliveries, which are also difficult to estimate in the first quarter. It is sure to assume that they are around 5,000 units.
This means that Tesla is down 15% that 8% in the United States in T1 2025.
Electrek taking
Yes, the change of model has certainly affected Tesla’s performance in the United States, but it is clearly not the only factor in play.
Tesla has finished the quarter with a record inventory that we do not see during the years. The car manufacturer has no arrears for the new Y model. You can get one today in many regions of the United States.
I think there are good reasons to worry about Tesla’s demand in the United States. The main reason is the damage of the brand caused by Elon Musk, which occurred especially in the second half of the first quarter.
The absence of arrears for new model orders is worrying.
I believe that deliveries will be increasing from the first quarter, but they will be down from T2 2024, and Tesla deliveries will be more likely for the full year 2025 despite most analysts believing that Tesla will always increase this year.
