A musician thought he was going to die when his muscles started spasming after drinking a toxic batch of poppy seeds in his tea.

Melbourne man Andy Jordan, who has been using poppy seeds for two years for a stomach problem, recalled the horrific experience on the Today Show.

A nationwide recall has been issued on numerous poppy seed products after several people were admitted to hospitals for poisonings across the country.

Mr Jordan said the effects of the wrong batch of poppy seeds started showing up within minutes.

“I drank the poppy seeds in the morning, and about five minutes later my eyes closed, and it felt like strychnine poisoning, the muscles started spasming all over, and I knew I had problems then,” he told the Today show host. Allison Langdon.

He explained that his brother tried to call an ambulance several times, but each time the number rang.

“I can’t get an ambulance. I called and called and called and no one answered.

Mr Jordan’s housemate then rushed him to hospital as his condition worsened significantly.

“I was having convulsions, every muscle was spasming in my chest, in my back, it felt like my kidneys were being crushed to death,” he said.

‘It was crazy. It was as if a chemical weapon had been mixed in the bag.

Mr Jordan explained that a toxicologist who was in hospital at the time immediately identified poppy seeds as the culprit in his poisoning.

He injected Mr Jordan with muscle relaxants to stop his muscles twitching and his body to calm down.

Mr Jordan believes his poisoning was the result of two batches of poppy seeds – one used for medicinal purposes and the other for general consumption, which were mixed together before he consumed the seeds.
