Terre Haute’s ‘Singing Janitor’ Stuns AGT Judges

Richard Goodall won Heidi Klum’s heart with his performance of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” during Tuesday’s auditions.

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — An Indiana school custodian is the latest star of “America’s Got Talent.”

Richard Goodall took the stage during the show’s 19th season premiere Tuesday night, performing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Her talent was revealed in a TikTok video, where millions watched the West Vigo Middle School student sing in front of a room full of students. This video landed him an audition for the show in Los Angeles.

“He represents Terre Haute as a city and gets us on a national television show and gives us recognition here in the city of Terre Haute, which is a great honor,” said West Vigo Middle School Principal Christopher Tanner, at WTWO-TV.

Tuesday’s show included a brief interview with Goodall, who described his journey to the audition in California as the feeling of “unbalance” when a plane takes off for the first time.

“It’s a good ‘unbalance,’ but until you do something you don’t know if it’s right for you or not,” he said.

After chatting with judge Simon Cowell about his nerves, he gave an idea of what he was about to sing.

“The song speaks for itself,” Goodell said. “This has been a long time coming.”

“I hope he’s okay,” Cowell told the other judges. “I really do.”

The performance received a standing ovation from all four judges and the audience.

“It was incredible,” announced host Terry Crews.

“I think America is going to love you,” Cowell said.

“I think you were perfect to come to ‘AGT,’ because you made our night,” judge Sofia Vergara added.

Goodall’s fate on the show wasn’t even up for a vote.

“Richard, Richard, Richard, you knocked me down,” judge Heidi Klum said as she reached for the Golden Buzzer. “Now this is what I’m going to do for you, because I love you.”

Klum and Crews then left the stage with Goodall to call his fiancée in Terre Haute to tell her the good news.

The Golden Buzzer means Goodall advances to the live shows, where he will compete for the American vote.
