Tennessee Baseball: NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

Aaron Combs faces the top of the order for the Aggies. Combs pitched four innings Sunday, throwing 64 pitches.

Gavin Grahovac doubles to start the inning. Andrew Behnke and Marcus Phillips pitch in the Vols’ bullpen.

Jace LaViolette strikes out, chasing a high fastball on a 3-2 pitch. Huge K for combs. A withdrawal.

Jackson Appel hits an RBI single to left field. Vols 6, Aggies 4. Texas A&M will have the tie at the plate.

Hayden Schott hits on a high fastball, which was Combs’ best pitch. Two outs.

Ted Burton steps up to the plate. Appel takes second base on defensive indifference, then moves to third base on a balk.

Combs’ wild throw to Stark allows the runner to score. Vols 6, Aggies 5.

Combs eliminates Ted Burton! The Tennessee Volunteers are the 2024 National Baseball Champions!

Tennessee 6, Texas A&M 3, lower 8th: The flights are getting closer

Cal Stark’s one-out double was canceled when he was caught in a fast pitch by Jackson Appel with two outs.

In the 9th inning, Aaron Combs is on the field. Can the Vols finish this?

Tennessee 6, Texas A&M 3, top 8: three outs of a national championship

Nate Snead continues to lead off the eighth inning and Jackson Appel leads off with a single. Appel advances twice 90 feet on a wild pitch, then scores on an RBI single by Hayden Schott.

Sorrell scores on a one-out RBI double from Caden Sorrell. The Vols now lead 6-3. Kirby Connell comes in for Snead.

After allowing an infield single, Connell goes strictly against speed to get two strikeouts to get out of the inning. The Vols left-hander takes advantage of the Aggies’ eager No. 8 and No. 9 hitters.

Tennessee 6, Texas A&M 1, bottom 7: Is this the dagger?

Dylan Dreiling, College World Series MVP?

Billy Amick gets a two-out single, then Dylan Dreiling sends a two-run home run into the Texas A&M bullpen in right field. Vols 5, Aggies 1.

Tennessee fans in Omaha feel it.

Hunter Ensley singles, then scores on an RBI double crushed by Kavares Tears. A&M’s relay was perfect, but Ensley somehow avoided the home tag and touched home plate. Wow. Flights lead 6-1.

Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1, top 7: Aggies threaten, but do not score

Kaeden Kent singles and pinch hitter Ryan Targac walks with one out. Nate Snead isn’t as sharp today as he was in the second game, but he will face Gavin Grahovac.

Grahovac flies away and Kent moves to third. Two outs for Jace LaViolette.

LaViolette beats down Blake Burke, but Christian Moore makes the play for the takedown 4-3 to end the round. What a moment for Moore, Burke and Snead to get out of trouble.

Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1, bottom 6: Evan Aschenbeck enters

This is an important point of the game. After blocking two in the top half, Texas A&M sends Evan Aschenbeck into the game to throw. He’s been very, very good this season and in Omaha, but if the Vols can score a point or two after the Aggies’ denial, that could be a huge change.

Dean Curley hits a double to left field, but the bottom of the Vols lineup can’t push him. Until the 7th inning.

Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1, top 6: Aggies strand two

After back-to-back singles, Zander Sechrist leaves the game. Nate Snead cleanly gets the Vols out of the inning after Blake Burke catches a line drive for the 6th A&M final.

Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1, bottom 5: Vols can’t put this away yet

Dylan Dreiling continued to be very productive, hitting a two-out double that got away from a Texas A&M outfielder. But Hunter Ensley flew out to right field to end the inning. The Vols offense hasn’t quite put this game away yet despite Zander Sechrist’s gem in progress.

Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1, top 5: Zander Sechrist continues to excel

Zander Sechrist shuts out the team in 5th A&M as he continues to pitch well in the postseason. Nate Snead is likely the Vols’ next pitcher, Tony Vitello told ESPN between innings, and that time is coming soon. Snead was pitching during this inning in the bullpen.

Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1, bottom 4

The steals are out in order against Aggies pitcher Josh Stewart. The Aggies will likely look for at least one more run for Stewart before turning to Evan Aschenbeck unless the Vols can put together a big run.

Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1, first 4th

Ted Burton walks and steals second base, but the Aggies can’t score it against Zander Sechrist.

Sechrist has been very good so far, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts on 63 pitches.

Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1, bottom 3: Steals add two

Blake Burke doubles to center to lead off 3rd UT, moves to third base on a flyout and scores on an RBI sacrifice fly by Dylan Dreiling.

Back-to-back singles knock out Aggies starter Justin Lamkin, and Dean Curley drives in Hunter Ensley with an RBI single.

Tennessee 1, Texas A&M 1, first 3rd: Aggies run

Aggies No. 9 hitter Travis Chesnut strikes out with two strikes and reaches, moving to second base after Cal Stark’s throw goes past Blake Burke. Chesnut then stole third base and scored on an RBI single by Gavin Grahovac.

Zander Sechrist gets a double play to end the inning. The Vols’ defense has been good at times, especially in the outfield, but it also helped the Aggies with runs in Games 1 and 3.

Tennessee 1, Texas A&M 0, last 2nd

Cal Stark draws a two-out walk, but Christian Moore appears in foul territory to end the inning.

Tennessee 1, Texas A&M 0, first 2nd

Zander Sechrist works around a leadoff single with a few flyouts and a strikeout.

Tennessee 1, Texas A&M 0, last 1st: Christian Moore HR leads Tennessee 1st

Aggies starter Justin Lamkin leads Christian Moore in the count, but Moore lines a 1-2 pitch down the left field line and into the bullpen for a solo home run. Flights lead 1-0. Important start for the Tennessee star.

Blake Burke singles and Dylan Dreiling walks, but the Vols can’t get another run going.

Tennessee 0, Texas A&M 0, first first

Tennessee is the home team tonight. Zander Sechrist throws out the first pitch at 7:09 p.m. ET, a strike to Gavin Grahovac.

Grahovac flies out to right field for the first out. The wind is blowing in spots, so it could impact the fly balls tonight.

Sechrist works 1-2-3 innings as the Vols look to take an early lead.
