Tennessee football team climbs recruiting rankings after landing Top247 receiver

After a series of engagements in June, Tennessee Football is on the agenda this month. The Vols landed another big addition to their 2025 recruiting class when Top247 receiver Travis Smith Jr. from Westlake High School in Atlanta has announced his commitment to Tennessee over its SEC rivals Georgia, Auburn And Alabama after taking official visits to all four schools last month. Smith’s arrival has helped Tennessee climb several spots in the ever-changing 247Sports recruiting rankings and the Vols are just outside the top 10 with a few elite targets still to be announced in the coming weeks.

Smith, who is 6-foot-3.5 and 199 pounds, is the No. 149 overall player, No. 15 receiver and No. 20 prospect in Georgia for the 2025 cycle according to 247Sports, and he is the No. 113 overall player and No. 16 receiver in the class in the 247Sports Composite.

Smith, who is coming off a junior season in which he caught 53 passes for 843 yards and 11 touchdowns, is the Vols’ third wide receiver commitment this cycle, joining a pair of in-state prospects in the four-star class. Jackson Radarist and three stars Joakim Dodson.

Among Tennessee’s 17 commitments, Smith is the seventh player ranked in the Top247, and 247Sports has two other four-star commits.

Smith’s commitment brought Tennessee’s total to 245.39 points, which moved the Vols from 15th to 11th, overtaking Clemson, Auburn, Missouri And Michigan. Tennessee now has the seventh-best class in the expanded 16-team SEC. The Vols’ average player rating is 90.93, which ranks 12th nationally.

Tennessee is slightly behind Pennsylvania State University (245.44 points/22 engagements) at n°10 and just ahead of n°12 Michigan (245.21/16). The Vols also exceeded Missouri (242.27/17), Auburn (239.23/16) and Clemson (236.28/13).

The top five classes currently are Ohio State (309.94/23), Alabama (299.32/21), Georgia (281.43/19), Oregon (270.39/16) and our Lady (265.26/21).

The rest of the top 10 is #6 Louisiana State University (265.01/16) followed by Texas A&M University (257.70/18), Oklahoma (256.86/21) and Miami (248.24/18) in front Pennsylvania State University.

Tennessee football team tries to put together another strong recruiting class after landing the class ranked #10 in 2023 And the class ranked #14 in 2024 – Those two classes included three five-star prospects and 24 four-star prospects according to 247Sports’ composite ratings.
