Tennessee boy, 10, seriously injured after being swept into neighborhood storm drains

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A 10-year-old Tennessee boy is fighting for his life following a heartbreaking incident in his neighborhood following a statewide outbreak of severe weather.

The young boy was swept away by water that rushed into a storm drain, leaving him in critical condition, according to Rutherford County Schools. The school district made the announcement Thursday morning after an outpouring of love and support from the community for Superintendent Jimmy Sullivan, his family and especially his son, Asher.

“We have received many requests from people wanting to help us, but what the family really needs right now is tons of prayers,” said the school board, which was hosting a volunteer vigil for the community at its offices .

Sullivan shared details of his son’s current condition on his personal Facebook page.

“Asher needs a miracle,” he said.

Sullivan said that while his neighbors helped pick up storm debris and put up fences, neighborhood children played in the water in the streets. Asher got caught in storm drains and was swept beneath neighborhood streets.

“He eventually came out in a drainage ditch and CPR was administered for a while,” Sullivan recounted. “His heartbeat has been restored but the damage is significant.”

Sullivan said her son’s lungs were severely damaged and he didn’t show much brain activity aside from muscle twitches.

“Specifically, pray for his lungs to heal and, most importantly, for his brain activity to occur,” he added.
