Temperature drop followed by freeze watch – NBC Chicago

Chicago will feel more like fall on Wednesday, thanks to a short-lived cold air mass that moved into the region.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the average high temperature for the month of April so far has reached 60 degrees. Two days this month, April reached 81 degrees, said NBC 5 meteorologist Alicia Roman.

On Wednesday, however, temperatures will drop back below average, with highs in the 40s along the lake and into the 50s further inland.

Wednesday will also be windy, Roman said, with morning clouds clearing for afternoon sun.

Overnight, temperatures will drop even further, falling “near and below freezing” outside Chicago, the National Weather Service said.

According to the NWS, a frost watch will go into effect at midnight in northern and western areas, including Lake, McHenry, DeKalb, Kane and Kenosha counties.

Temperatures below 28 degrees are possible,” an NWS alert states. “Freezing and freezing conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.”

The vigil will remain in effect until 8 a.m.

Thursday and Friday temperatures are expected to rise again, Roman said, with highs in the 50s and 60s. There will be a greater chance of rain Friday afternoon and evening, with a few thunderstorms possible, Roman added.

Chicago’s weekend forecast looks warmer, with highs in the mid-70s on Saturday and Sunday, Roman said. However, both days could see chances of rain, with storms possible on Sunday.
