CEDAR HILL, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A lucky but dangerous rescue was made by a Jefferson County man on Monday after two teenagers collapsed in freezing water in Cedar Hill.

On Monday afternoon, the Cedar Hill Fire Protection District was called to a neighborhood pond near Kent Drive and the NN Highway.

“The water in some of these bodies, lakes and the like is still quite warm, so they’re not freezing like you might think,” Fire Chief Mick Fischer said.

This is the case of the pond that the teenagers tried to leave on Monday. Ice shards, boots and a gaping hole remain on the pond where first responders said an afternoon of play could have quickly turned deadly.

“They were just walking on the ice and from what I can tell what I saw they got about 20 meters out on that lake and the ice got thinner there over time as we had, and they fell,” Fischer explained.

After the adult at the scene called 911, Fischer said they went to rescue the two teens.

“He actually belly-crawled as far as he could towards them, and as he got closer, he fell too,” Fischer said.

It’s an incident that first responders train for, but something they said they rarely react to. They warn people of freezing water after the extremely hot temperatures we experienced this winter. Fischer said the teenagers and adults got out of the pond safely. He recommends no one to enter the water for a rescue. However, if you absolutely must, he said to call 911 first. Then make sure you stay close to shore, have an object you can hold on to, then another object like a boat or a stick to throw at the victim.

“It’s human nature to want to help people. You just have to use common sense,” Fischer said.
