Teenage Stadium of Fire Dancer Says She Was Hit by Fireworks

PROVO, Utah — The Fourth of July celebration at the Stadium of Fire in Provo took an unexpected turn when fireworks hit people in the stands and on the field — one of them was dancer McKenzie Harvey, 17.

“I was so shocked. I never thought this would happen to me, it’s so crazy!” Harvey said. “The energy and the adrenaline is so fun, it’s good, it’s a good time.”

It was his third time on stage at the Stadium of Fire.

Harvey is part of the Heber City Intensity dance team. They practiced at the studio for weeks, then at the stadium in the days leading up to the event.

As she prepared for the flyover, Harvey said a firework hit her and she bounced forward.

“It all happened really fast,” she said. “I remember seeing the fireworks coming towards the crowd from different places and they came right behind me, so I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was in shock, it hurt and it sent an electric shock through my body.”

Harvey suffered burns to her arm, leg and back, but she still had a routine to perform.

“I was just like, oh, I’m not going to work as hard and I’m not going to perform, I was so excited and motivated!” Harvey said.

Her studio manager, Karissa Molen, was with Harvey to help her get treatment.

“So we called 911, she was examined and they tried to do their job, but she said, ‘Can we do this quickly? I have to perform,’” Molen said. “I said, can we just wrap it up and if it still hurts, we’ll come right back. We just have to wrap it up quickly and then we’ll go,” Molen said.

Harvey got hard and went back to what she loves.

“We went back out there and she got into position and she did it. She did a fantastic job,” Molen added.

Harvey said she’s still processing it all and is just happy to be okay. She’s also proud of herself for getting back into dancing.

“The fact that I had the stamina and the endurance to keep going, I’m glad I’m strong enough to do it.”
