Teen shot dead in downtown Willoughby; 23-year-old taken into custody

Willoughby police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Saturday morning that left one of the 17-year-old boys dead.

Around 12:30 a.m., police responded to a shooting in downtown Willoughby. When they arrived, officers said they found the teen lying in an alley on Erie Street.

Willoughby Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and immediately rendered aid to the 17-year-old; however, he died at the scene from his injuries, police said.

Detectives investigating the shooting learned that a 23-year-old Painesville man may have been responsible for the teen’s death, police said.

Around 10 a.m. Saturday, the person was found driving on Interstate 90/80 in Indiana, and with the assistance of Indiana State Police, the person’s vehicle was stopped and he was taken into custody, police said.

The victim and the 23-year-old man are believed to have been the only ones involved in the shooting, but police said no motive has been identified.
