A 16-year-old girl was shot and killed during a home invasion in Aurora Tuesday morning and police are searching for a suspect.
Aurora officers responded to reports of a home invasion and shooting at an apartment complex in the 10600 block of East Jewell Avenue around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from the department police.
When they arrived, they found a 16-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. Investigators have not said where she was shot.
The girl lived in the apartment that was burglarized with her family, but no one else was injured, Aurora police spokesman Joe Moylan said. Police do not know if any items were taken from the apartment.
The block is home to the Willowick Apartments, a car rental service, a used car dealership and other businesses. It’s just east of South Havana Street and south of East Colorado Avenue.
Officers performed life-saving measures on the girl until paramedics arrived on the scene to rush her to hospital, where she later died, police said.
The teen will be identified later by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
Police have not yet identified a suspect, but said the investigation is active and ongoing.
