Tech layoffs jolt Bay Area economy with hundreds of new job cuts

SUNNYVALE — A leading aerospace and defense contractor and a semiconductor company were among the latest technology companies to cut jobs in the Bay Area, cuts that will eliminate more than 200 positions.

Lockheed Martin, Coherent and Hinge Health, a technology company that offers online physical therapy services, have decided to cut jobs, according to official notices filed with the state Employment Development Department.

Here are the details of the most recent layoffs in the tech industry, including the number of employees the companies intend to cut and the locations of the 206 Bay Area jobs that are being lost:

— Lockheed Martin, aerospace and defense titan, 68 job cuts in Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. The layoffs are expected to take effect June 10.

— Coherent, semiconductor equipment manufacturer, 61 layoffs in Santa Clara. These reductions are planned for June 10.

— Hinge Health, a technology company that offers online physical therapies such as joint and muscle care, 77 staff reductions in San Francisco. The layoffs are expected to take place on June 11.

In all three cases, the companies described the job cuts as permanent.

So far in April, tech companies have revealed plans to cut 949 jobs in the Bay Area, including the 614 layoffs Apple revealed for Santa Clara workers.

April’s tech layoffs exceed the 352 Bay Area job cuts reported by tech companies in March.

However, the current layoff total for April and the amount announced for March are well below the workforce reductions tech companies announced in January and February.

In January, tech companies announced their decision to cut 3,248 jobs in the Bay Area. In February, the tech industry revealed plans to cut 2,182 positions across the nine-county region.

In 2022, 2023 and so far in 2024, tech companies have revealed plans to cut more than 38,800 jobs in the Bay Area.
