The video for Ms. Swift’s song Fortnight, the first single from her new album The Tortured Poets Department, sent her millions of fans into a frenzy when it was posted to YouTube on Friday morning.
It is the 34-year-old’s first album since the breakdown of her six-year relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn, and it is believed to be the target of much of her anger in songs such as So Long, London.
Even the album’s title – his first since 2022’s Midnights – is a mocking take on a WhatsApp group Alwyn shares with actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott called Tortured Man Club.
Matty Healy, the “bad boy” frontman of The 1975, with whom Ms. Swift had a brief fling, is no exception either – Swifties (the nickname of the singer’s most devoted fans) thinks he is the inspiration behind the song The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.

The singer said the album was an anthology of new works reflecting “events, opinions and feelings from a fleeting and fatalistic moment – a moment both sensational and painful in equal measure.” She went on to say that this period of her life was over, adding: “The chapter is over and closed. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once the wounds have healed. Once we tell our saddest story, we can free ourselves from it.
Her talent in her work is to keep fans guessing about the hidden messages – and that was the case with the release of the Fortnight video, in which she duets with American rapper Post Malone.
The video suggests that Ms. Swift found love so difficult that it drove her crazy. She appears to be in an asylum and is seen lying on a bed without a mattress, chained to the railing.
