talkSPORT betting tips – Best F1 bets and expert advice for Japanese Grand Prix

Carlos Sainz Jr. caused a surprise at the Australian Grand Prix by taking advantage of Max Verstappen’s misfortune to end the world champion’s perfect start to the season, but Red Bull should return to the top in Japan this weekend.

Verstappen has won the last two races at Suzuka, where Red Bull’s aerodynamic advantage allows them to shine, and the dynamic Dutchman could also benefit from an improved car this weekend.

Tips for the Japanese Grand Prix

  • Lando Norris finishes on the podium 11/4
  • Yuki Tsunoda’s points finish 11/10
  • Winning margin of 5-10 seconds 11/4

Lando Norris on the podium – 11/4

Ferrari’s victory in Australia should in no way be seen as a reversal of the trend and this is reflected in the odds for the Japanese Grand Prix with Max Verstappen heavy favorite at odds of 1/5 to return to winning ways .

Verstappen suffered a major brake problem after starting the race on pole, but if he avoids further technical or mechanical problems it is difficult to see him being beaten at a track where he has dominated for the past two seasons.

The Dutchman won at Suzuka by 27 seconds in 2022, edging Sergio Perez in a Red Bull one-two, and last year he was 19 seconds ahead of Lando Norris in the leading McLaren.

The Adrian Newey-designed Red Bull’s aerodynamics are at their best in Suzuka’s fast, sweeping corners, and the bad news for their rivals is that the team could make an upgrade to their car for this race.

Although Ferrari has improved its high-speed performance this year, the Italian team has not triumphed in Japan since Michael Schumacher’s in 2004, and it could well be challenged by McLaren in the race to be the best of the rest.

Norris and Oscar Piastri took second and third places on the podium at Suzuka last September and the strength of the papaya-colored cars lies in the high-speed corners, which are omnipresent on this circuit.

The British driver is still looking for his first race victory, but it’s a good prize at 11/4 to add to his total of 14 podiums this week.

Yuki Tsunoda finishes on points – 11/10

Yuki Tsunoda scored the Visa Cash App RB team’s first points of the season in Australia with an impressive run to seventh, and the Japanese driver looks like a great bet to add to his tally in his race at residence.

Tsunoda outperformed his more experienced teammate Daniel Ricciardo in his own home event, qualifying ten places better in eighth, and will enjoy racing on the track where he can benefit from plenty of local knowledge from his participation in the junior series.

The 23-year-old has finished in the points in three of the last five races of the 2023 season and is expected to aim for another top ten finish in front of his fervent fans.

Winning margin of 5-10 seconds – 11/4

While Verstappen’s average margin of victory has been 23 seconds in Japan over the past two seasons, there is reason to believe a more modest margin should be expected this weekend.

Both Ferrari and McLaren are strong in the high-speed corners that characterize the Suzuka track, but Verstappen’s closest competition will likely come from teammate Sergio Perez.

Perez was second to Verstappen in Japan two years ago, although he crossed the line 27 seconds behind the Dutchman. Perez started the race from fourth on the grid that day, allowing Verstappen to pull away while overtaking both Ferraris.

A better qualifying performance is likely this year and Perez will be keen to impress after his complicated race in Australia when a three-place grid penalty and race damage left him unable to challenge for victory in the absence of Verstappen.

A winning margin of more than ten seconds is 4/6, but the price of 11/4 for a five to ten second win is more attractive, especially with the threat of a late safety car period potentially reducing any advantage that the leader could have accumulated. .
