Taliban barbarism in Afghanistan; Afghan woman brutally whipped in public

Kabul: Ravaged by decades of war, Afghanistan is no stranger to extreme violence and barbarism. However, the emergence of the Taliban in the mid-1990s brought Afghans to even more extreme levels of depravity.

Claiming the legitimacy of the tenets of Islamic ideology, the Taliban imposed Sharia law on the territories they controlled in Afghanistan after first taking Kabul in 1996.

The Taliban regime was particularly harsh on Afghan women because they had to wear burqas, were forbidden to go outside and were subjected to brutal pubic floggings on the slightest pretext.

Displaced by the United States and its NATO allies following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Taliban waged guerrilla warfare for nearly two decades before retaking Kabul in August last year.

The return of the Taliban was preceded by the promises of Taliban 2.0, a supposedly less extreme and more humane version of the hardline Islamist regime of the 1990s.

However, this has proven to be only a pipe dream as Islamic Sharia-inspired Taliban barbarism continues unabated.

The latest incident to come to light is the brutal public flogging of a woman in a burqa by a Taliban court somewhere in Afghanistan.

However, the nature of the offense committed by the woman could not be established.
