SWAT team responds to Arkansas Mall, police ask public to avoid area

CONWAY, Arkansas– A SWAT team from a central Arkansas police department responded to an incident at a shopping center Saturday morning and people were asked to avoid the area.

Conway police said on Facebook that officers responded to the Lewis Crossing Mall “for an incident in progress at this time.” The post did not provide details.

Media reported that someone crashed a vehicle into an unoccupied massage therapy business and nearby businesses were emptied of customers and employees. Photos posted on social media showed numerous police cars responding to the shopping center parking lot.

Bystander video showed the SWAT team with weapons drawn forcing their way into an adjacent restaurant. Shots were fired, although it was not immediately clear where the shots came from. Arkansas State Police were investigating the incident, calling it an “officer-involved shooting,” KATV-TV reported.

Further details were not immediately available from police.

Some respondents to the police Facebook post said they were locked in nearby stores.

Conway is approximately 33 miles (53 kilometers) north of Little Rock.
