WILMINGTON – A man peacefully surrendered to offers from Wilmington police and the SWAT team around 10 a.m. Friday at a residence in the 300 block of South Wall Street after several hours of negotiations and ultimately the use of gas tear gas to drive him out of the house.

Police were called by the suspect’s mother after the man allegedly threatened her with a knife.

Police eventually fired tear gas into the house and the suspect exited the house onto the porch roof.

After further negotiations with the police, a city bucket truck was brought in and the man voluntarily climbed into the bucket and was lowered and handcuffed.

Police Chief Ron Fithen said the man would be taken to hospital for an assessment of his mental health and any necessary treatment for the effects of tear gas.

Fithen expects the suspect to be charged with a crime. Police plan to release more details later on Friday.
