A woman was killed early Thursday morning when an erroneous driver collapsed head -on in her vehicle on Interstate 8 in the college region, said a California road patrol.
The other driver, a man in their twenties, survived the collision and was then arrested in the hospital suspected of driving in intoxication, the authorities said.
The accident was reported shortly before 2:50 a.m. after a black SUV heading west in the lanes in eastern direction has struck a mini cooper just to the east of College Avenue. The impact sent the mini cooper of the highway and going down an embankment, said the SGT CHP. Ray Scheidnes.
The driver, a woman in the early 1960s, died in the car before she could be taken to the hospital. The firefighters had to get it out of the destroyed vehicle.
The SUV driver was injured in the accident. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries that are not considered fatal, said Scheidnes.
The CHP officers closed the highway while they were investigating the accident. The traffic in the direction has been diverted to avenue college for several hours. All tracks reopened around 6 a.m.

No other details were immediately available. The names of the woman killed and the man arrested were not released.
