The suspect who shot at police in the Centennial neighborhood has been arrested and the shelter-in-place order has been rescinded.
On Thursday, December 28, 2023 at 8:09 p.m., the East Precinct responded to a report that a wanted suspect had been seen in the area of Southeast Division Street and Southeast 143rd Avenue. The named suspect was an adult male wanted in connection with a recent homicide case. Police located the suspect leaving an apartment and driving away in a vehicle. Officers deployed spike strips and deflated the vehicle’s tires. The suspect drove to an apartment in the 2700 block of 148th Avenue Southeast and was arrested by police. He pulled out a handgun and began shooting at the officers. The officers took cover and the suspect ran into an apartment. He continued to fire numerous shots at police from inside the apartment.
Due to the immediate threat of death or serious injury to police and community members, officers surrounded the apartment, closed roads and sidewalks in the area, and activated the Special Response Team. emergency (SERT) and the crisis negotiation team (CNT). The Air Support Unit and small unmanned aerial system (drone) operators also provided assistance.
Incident commanders activated the public alert system to notify nearby community members of the incident, ordering them to stay indoors, lock doors and windows, and stay away exterior windows.
At 12:03 a.m., the suspect left the apartment and went to police. He was stopped. The suspect will be identified after being charged.
No shots were fired by police and no injuries were reported.
The Gresham Police Department and East Metro SWAT assisted in the response.

The Portland Police Tactical Team is responding to an incident in the Centennial neighborhood in which shots were fired by a suspect at police. No officers were injured.
The Special Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were activated for the incident.
The incident occurred on 148th Avenue Southeast, just south of Southeast Division Street. Portland Police officers have established a perimeter and roads are closed to all traffic between Southeast Division Street and Southeast Woodward Street, Southeast 148th Avenue and Southeast 153rd Avenue. In this area, the public alert system has been activated. Community members have been asked to shelter in place, meaning staying indoors with doors locked and staying away from windows.
