Supreme Court says Uttarakhand’s approach to controlling forest fires is lackadaisical

On Wednesday (May 15), the Supreme Court attacked the Uttarakhand forest department over the issue of forest fires. The court pointed out a huge vacancy in the forest department and said it needs to be addressed.

The apex court has asked the Uttarakhand chief secretary to be present at the hearing on May 17. The court observed that action plans had been prepared and finalized but no steps had been taken for their implementation.

“We are at pains to characterize Uttarakhand’s approach to forest fire control as lackadaisical,” the court said.
