‘Superman’ Movie Filming: Man of Steel Faces The Engineer, Unnamed Villain at Progressive Field (Photos, Spoilers)

WARNING! Potential spoilers ahead! You have been warned.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Filming on “Superman” resumed at Progressive Field Friday morning, with James Gunn’s stadium fight scene continuing on mats spread out in the outfield.

With Superman’s stunt double on a tightrope, the Man of Steel’s unnamed black-suited foe took a wide swing at the hero, “landing” a blow that sent the stunt double into a tailspin in right field. The shot was rehearsed several times before the crew made a partial switch to another “stunt team.”

A lifting device was brought in to film a presumably aerial shot. Lead actors David Corenswet and María Gabriela de Faría (the characters of Superman and the Engineer) were brought onto the set from the home plate area.

Corenswet was attached to a cable harness for the next scene for some additional flips. Below, de Faría appeared to be face down in an evasive pose.

Once the shoot was complete, the crew requested “clean plates” – background shots – and prepared for the next scene in the fictional “Lordtech Field,” which the crew suggested would move toward the third-base/right-field line.

Unlike a typical game day, the stadium was empty of fans. The prevailing theory is that Superman lures his enemies to any empty stadium to avoid the kind of destruction we’ve seen in other scenes shot in downtown Cleveland, er, Metropolis.

The Metropolis Meteors Stadium was decorated with panache. The foreground was decorated with fictional advertisements from the DC Comics universe that should make any comic book fan smile. Everything from Metropolis Transit and “GBS News” (Galaxy Broadcasting System) to First Metropolis Bank, Soder Cola, Ducel, Zesti Cola and Big Belly Burger were represented.

There’s also a banner on the field that says, “Welcome to the home of the Metropolis Meteors, World Series Champions.” Guardians fans would like to see life imitate art for once! We digress. We just want to join the “Meteors Fan Club” (another sign) and score that “M” cap.
