Supercommut has traveled more than 4 hours for work for 10 years; It’s worth it

I grew up in Thornaby, a small town in the northeast of England. In the late 1990s, I lived in London while working as a magazine publisher. After having my first baby in 2000, my partner and I moved to the East Midlands to be closer to the family.

For 10 years, I spent more than four hours a day going to London to work. I always make the trip a few days a month.

It was worth improving the quality of life of my family while retaining a job in London with a salary in London, but if it had the opportunity to do it again, I would ask for more flexibility.

Although the initial reason for the move was to be closer to the family, I loved the slow and outdoor lifestyle of Wellingborough.

In 2004, I bought a five -bedroom Victorian house for £ 285,000. If I had bought a house similar to London at the time, it would have cost nearly a million sterling pounds.

I also have a 100 -foot courtyard, which I could never afford in London.

My journey was 140 miles round trip

My day started with a walk 20 minutes from my home at the station, a one -hour train journey, a 40 -minute tube tour and a 10 -minute walk from the station to my office.

A few years after the start of this journey, I managed to negotiate one day away per week with my employer, so I started to shuttle four days a week instead of five.

I appreciated my time in supercomulation

After getting used to my new routine, I became grateful to have time to enjoy my coffee, respond to emails, meditate, read or chat with other passengers.

I have plunged deep into large podcasts and books and appreciated the opportunities for mindfulness practices.

The journey was expensive

Today, an annual train allowance (without traveling to London) can cost more than £ 8,900.

I spent about £ 6,000 a year for transportation, £ 600 per month for daycare and about £ 20 per day for coffee and lunch. I had an expense account and sometimes Schmoozing customers, so certain taxi and meal costs were on the business.

The key is to make a salary high enough to compensate for additional routes; I had colleagues who tried supercomulation but who opted for local employment, because trains and daycare services in the United Kingdom are so expensive.

Delays can also be a day rumor

It was not uncommon to meet bumps on the road either. Even short delays or planned maintenance can disrupt the plans and make the trip unpleasant, but it is delivered with the territory.

Even if I was not at home all the time and I missed some school events, I have no regrets. I attended the most important events and sports matches, and my children were very well socialized and happy.

Once I became a freelancer, my daily journey ended

I was dismissed in 2010 and I decided to leave my career as an internal publisher to provide independent public relations and journalism services. Now I just have to go to London for the occasional meeting.

My children grew up and moved, but Stella, my mixture of Bernese mountain dogs, and I like to walk in the woods and experience everything that the countryside offers. Stella prefers that I limit my trips as much as possible, and I am happy to oblige.

I would be happy again with Super-Commun, but part-time part-time

I would consider the supercomulation for the right work, but things should be different. I found that balance is imperative for a quality life, and for me, that does not include the shuttle of hundreds of kilometers per day, every day.

I would ask for a more flexible schedule, such as work at home twice a week and supercomulation three days a week.
