Sunnyvale woman sells homemade cookies to mark holidays

Skip aside the Easter Bunny; there’s a promising service in town that offers festive treats.

Sunnyvale resident Megan Wong owns One Cute Cookie Bakery, a small business where she makes and intricately decorates cookies for special occasions and holidays like Easter. The stay-at-home mother of two launched her business in 2022 as a passion project and is increasingly appreciated by locals for her attention to detail and willingness to take orders during the busy holiday season.

“I’ve already had several people contact me saying, ‘I forgot to order Easter cookies.’ Will you have more?’ “, did she say. “I always prepare extras, because I know a lot of people will ask me at the last minute.”

Orders are placed through the One Cute Cookie website and prepared in Wong’s kitchen. In addition to pre-decorated regular and mini sugar cookies, it also offers personalized cookies and “Paint Your Own Cookie” kits, which include a mini paintbrush, an edible paint palette, and sugar cookies printed with a pattern in black and white.

Wong’s busiest times are between October and December, or between Halloween and Christmas, when she receives 30 to 35 orders. Easter, however, may come right after. This year, she is working to finalize 15 orders, or 82 items, before the holidays.

“I’m a pretty slow decorator, so it’s a lot to do in a week,” the Fremont native said.

Easter cookie baking begins as early as January, when Wong brainstorms a list of design ideas and tests decorations. A month before the holidays, it releases a pre-sale where customers can place orders. This year, she’s featuring creations including pastel-colored Easter eggs, white bunny faces and a bright yellow chick with glowing eyes. Cookie costs may vary depending on factors such as size, design and packaging type. Its Easter pre-sale products ranged from $6.50 for an individual cookie to $55 for a tray of 18 mini cookies.

Wong said she was never a baker, but motherhood inspired her to pick up cookie cutters and piping tips. She began baking cookies for her children’s birthdays and Christmas events, and shared them with friends and family members before launching her service.

“I loved doing it,” she said. “I have photos of the first Christmases where I decorated cookies with (my son) and I was so proud of what I did. Looking back on it now, it wasn’t very good at all, but it interested me.

But baking the treats, especially during the holiday season, isn’t always a good deal. During the day, Wong is busy taking care of her family. Only when they are soundly asleep can Wong start cooking and decorating, sometimes staying up until 1 or 2 a.m. to finish them.

“It’s been difficult to limit my orders to something that’s manageable for me so that it doesn’t impact my family or my sleep as much,” she said.

His hard work does not go unnoticed, especially by his clients.

During the holiday season from November to December, Sunnyvale resident Mariela Sanchez typically orders several “Paint Your Own Cookie” kits from Wong. Her four boys love decorating cookies to pass the time when they get home from school during recess.

“It’s really cute,” she said. “As a mom of four boys, she really saved (the kids) from boredom during any type of playtime.”

She recently purchased an Easter-themed kit to bring to her loved ones in Fresno, who have also become accustomed to the activity.

“It’s like our thing now: This aunt brings cookies and we paint,” she said.

Like Sanchez, Erica Mendes visits the bakery whenever there is a special occasion, like her child’s birthday. The Sunnyvale resident enjoys ordering personalized cookies and is constantly amazed at the level of detail Wong can achieve.
