Sunil Gavaskar criticizes Riyan Parag for poor shot selection in Qualifier 2 against SRH

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at Riyan Parag for his premature dismissal against Surnisers Hyderabad in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Qualifier 2 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. Chasing 176, RR were 65/2 in 7.5 overs when Parag joined Sanju Samson in the middle.

Parag played a pivotal role in Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) success in IPL 2024. His consistent performances at No. 4 helped them rack up big totals regularly.

However, he struggled against SRH on a difficult surface, getting six runs from nine deliveries, before being dismissed by Shahbaz Ahmed in the tenth over. It was the first delivery of the 12th over and Parag ended up handing a catch to Abhishek Sharma in a bid to increase the intensity of the score as the required run rate was 10.66 at that point.

“Seriously, seriously, seriously…what’s the point of all this talent if you don’t use your brain,” Gavaskar said on microphone after Parag’s dismissal.

Parag had an exceptional campaign in the IPL 2024. It was his sixth season in the competition, but perhaps the first in which he had some role clarity, playing the entire season at the 4th position.

Parag notched 573 runs in 15 matches, averaging 52.09 given he was not out three times. He scored runs at a rate of 149.22, registering four half-centuries with the highest score of 84*. He slammed 40 fours and 33 sixes, playing the role of a middle-order enforcer to perfection.
