Sundance Film Festival Adds Documentaries ‘The Alabama Solution’ and ‘The Stringer’

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival has added two documentary films to its premiere section, The Alabama Solution And The Stringer.

The Alabama Solution is directed by directors and producers Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman and follows an incarcerated man who defies the odds to expose a cover-up in one of America’s deadliest prison systems. HBO will be released The Alabama Solution. Jarecki He directed the Emmy Award-winning documentary series The curse for HBO, as well as Capturing the Friedmans which had its world premiere at Sundance in 2003 and won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the New York Film Critics Circle Award, and was nominated for an Academy Award. Jarecki also had Just a clown (2004) and The jink in 2015 at the festival.

Filmmaker Bao Nguyen is also a Sundance veteran, and his latest The silt follows a two-year investigation revealing a scandal behind the making of one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century. Five decades of secrets are revealed in the quest for justice for a man known only as “Ooze.” The sub manages sales.

Nguyen has already created Be water (2020) and The biggest pop night (2024).

“The addition of these two non-fiction feature films to our robust lineup of documentaries offered at the Festival, both narrated by filmmakers who have been part of our Sundance community for many years, complements our programming with compelling explorations around of justice and truth”, declared Kim Yutani, director of programming, Sundance Film Festival.

Ahead of the Christmas deadline, it was reported that the Eugene Jarecki-directed documentary The Six Billion Dollar Man about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange withdrew from the festival two weeks after Sundance revealed its 2025 lineup.

Today’s additions bring the festival’s feature count to 88 projects. Sundance will take place January 23 – February 2, 2025, in person in Park City and in Salt Lake City, Utah, January 30 – February. 2.

Starting January 30, more than half of the program will be available online for audiences across the country to watch from home at festival.sundance.org. The online program will include all competition titles (US Dramatic, US Documentary, World Cinema Dramatic, World Cinema Documentary and NEXT presented by Adobe), as well as additional selections from the feature, episode and short film program .
